Hunt Story
I arrived at my climbing stand well before daylight, sunrise was 7 am. My stand was in a hardwood grove next to planted pines that I estimated were 8-10 years old. Did not see anything until around 9 a.m. when two coyotes ran through the planted pines at a high rate of speed. About 9:30 a spiked walked nearby and was feeding on grass. I had been grunting about every 30 minutes. He disappeared after a few minutes. At 10:15 a.m. I saw this buck in the planted pines about 80 yards away. I scoped the buck, but was unable to verify he was a legal shooter, per WMA quality-buck regulations. He moved to my right, and I lost sight of him. I decided to hit my grunt call with one quick grunt. In about 5 minutes, he appeared to my left front on a logging road and was walking directly toward me. After about a minute, I had a shot that was acceptable as I did not want a straight-on shot. Best buck of my life.
