Hunt Story
The Schley County rut was in full force, and the weather was cool. My 6-year-old son and I sprang out of bed at 5:00, excited to have a great morning hunt together. We were so happy to find that the wind was finally right for us to sit in the tree stand that we really wanted to hunt. Our cameras showed a good morning pattern of a mature buck in this area, but we had been unable to hunt this stand for 3-4 weeks because of unfavorable winds. We settled in the tree, said a prayer, and watched the sun come up. Deer were running all around us, just out of sight. Finally, the lucky doe came in and stopped, and we could hear grunting and footsteps coming in behind her. I whispered to my son to be perfectly still and get ready to see a buck. One quick glimpse confirmed what we had hoped. It was Goalpost, the 5 1/2-year-old 8-point named for his characteristic wide-set brow tines. He came in right behind the doe, and we closed the deal at 70 yards. My little buddy tracked the blood and led us 50 yards to our heavy, south Georgia trophy.
