Hunt Story

Nate's grandfather, my father, told me to leave work a little early so I could go hunting. I called home and told my wife to get Nate ready for a quick evening hunt. We have two stands that we can get to quickly, and I let Nate choose which one he wanted to try. He chose a stand on a powerline that we have a small foodplot planted on. We got settled by about 4:30, and within 20 minutes we had does feeding in the plot. Nate was dying to shoot one of the does, but I kept telling him to hold on because I had a good feeling we were going to see a legal buck. We then saw a good buck about 300 yards off, so I tried to convince him that bucks were moving and it would only be a matter of time. A couple more does and fawns came out, and they kept looking back in the woods, so I told him to get ready. A few minutes later I heard Nate excitedly whispering "Horns! Horns!" I turned and immediately knew it was a good buck. We got his gun up, but Nate was having trouble getting settled on the buck because of the height of the window in the stand, and the buck chased two does back into the woods. When he went in the woods, I sat in Nate's seat and Nate sat in my lap. Soon the does came back out with the buck in tow. He stepped out, and the next thing I knew he dropped like a sack of taters. As Nate said "boom, plop." He never moved. I'm pretty sure that I was more shaken up than Nate was. As soon as we saw the buck I prayed for a quick, clean kill and my prayers were answered. I couldn't have dreamed of a better hunt for Nate's first buck.
