Hunt Story

It was Saturday morning on October 31st. I woke my son, who was supposed to go to my stand with his girlfriend because he wanted her to see some deer. When we woke up, he said he wasn't going to the stand. So I decided that I would go to mine instead. I arrived at my stand that morning like every other morning. It was early, about 6:15. It was unusually warm and foggy. A slight mist was coming down at daybreak. It was a nice overcast morning. I love to hunt on days like this because I always feel like I'm going to see a big buck. At about 8:30 I noticed a deer to my right. I checked it with my binoculars and noticed it was a2-year-old basket eight. I never raised my gun. I knew he was a young buck who has potential for next year. He circled through the woods and came out in front of me and then entered the woods again. I assumed he was circling my stand and would come out to my left. After a few minutes, I realized he had probably turned and walked off. At about 9:30 I noticed a deer to the left side of my stand. I grabbed my binoculars and instantly knew he was a shooter. I grabbed my .270 Browning Automatic and got in position. The buck had entered into the field at about 120 yards and was now at about 150 yards. I thought he might not turn but just as I thought that he did. At 160 yards away he turned broadside, in two more steps he's gone through. I steadied myself and took my shot. I climbed down and went back to camp to get my son. We waited an hour then went to check for blood. As we approached the spot when he was standing my son grabbed my arm and started shaking me. He said, " there he is right there ." Laying only 20 feet from where I shot, he just barely made it to the woods.
