Hunt Story
I hunted the same stand that morning and saw seven, along with two small bucks. I'm hunting a hardwood ridge loaded with acorns with bedding areas on both sides. I almost moved my stand of rate afternoon hunt but changed my mind at the last minute. It was a pretty uneventful afternoon. The wind had picked up and nothing was moving until about 30 minutes before dark. I had two spikes feed by me that got my attention up. I looked toward one of the clear cuts and saw the body of a deer standing 100 yards away. I used my rangefinder to see it had a set of horns. I made one soft grunt, and the buck came on a string my way. When he was at 15 yards, I let the release go. A high rear leg lick, and he was off tearing though the woods. I watched him as far as I could (about 60 yards) and he went out of sight. The arrow did not make a pass-through, which had me a little worried. I went ahead and climbed down so I could find a blood trail before it got dark. It didn't take long, and I found a large pool of good. He was only about 20 yards from that point. I was one happy hunter!
