Hunt Story
On the morning of Oct. 20, I hunted a ladder stand that I had recently set up on a roadbed separating mature planted pines and a clearcut. This was the first time that I hunted the stand. Early I saw a smaller 8-point following a doe in the pines. At 9:36 I noticed a sapling tree shaking at the edge of the pines. The buck stepped into the roadbed and turned facing straight toward me. He then turned to go back into the pines. I had to take a shot with the buck angled toward me. The bullet from my 300 WSM entered the buck's shoulder and did not exit. The buck ran 40 yards and crashed. When retrieving the buck, me and my son found a line of fresh scrapes that the buck must have been checking.
