Hunt Story
PARKER AND MYSELF ARRIVED AT OUR GROUND BLIND ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AROUND 5:00 PM . IT WAS A CLEAR AFTERNOON WITH NO WIND EXCEPT ON OCCASION. OUR GROUND BLIND IS LOCATED ON THE EDGE OF THE WOODLINE LOOKING ACROSS A FIELD OVERLOOKING A FOOD PLOT PLANTED WITH AUSTRALIAN PEAS. THE FOOD PLOT WAS LOCATED AT THE EDGE OF A PRIVET AREA ALONG A RIVER BASIN. THE EVENING WENT ALONG UNEVENTFUL UNTIL ABOUT 6:30 AND PARKER NOTICED A DEER COME INTO THE FIELD ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE AND EXIT THE FIELD NOT SURE IF IT WAS A BUCK OR DOE. ABOUT FIVE MINUTES LATER A BUTTON BUCK AND A SMALL DOE CAME OUT OF THE PRIVET AND INTO THE FOOD PLOT. WE WATCHED THEM FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES AND I (DAD) SEEN A BUCK COME INTO THE OPENING IN THE PRIVET ABOUT 30 YARDS BEHIND THE FOOD PLOT. HE WAS BROWSING IN THE OPENING. PARKER IN ORDER TO GET AN OPEN SHOT HAD TO SLIDE OUT OF HIS CHAIR AND CRAWL ACROSS THE GROUND TO A DIFFERENT AREA OF OUR GROUND BLIND. ONCE IN POSITION HE WAITED UNTIL THE BUCK PRESENTED A BROAD SIDE SHOT. (WHILE HE IS DOING ALL OF THIS HE IS SHAKING LIKE A LEAF ON A TREE. IT WAS ALL I COULD DO NOT TO LAUGH AT HIM BECAUSE I COULD SEE BUCK FEVER HAD SET IN. HE COULDN'T EVEN WHISPER WITHOUT STUTTERING.) HE TOOK A DEEP BREATH AND MADE AN EXCELLENT SHOT. WE WERE LUCKY THAT THE BUCK ACTUALLY RAN TOWARDS US WHERE PARKER WAS ABLE TO GET OFF A SECOND SHOT AND THE DEER EXPIRED WITHIN OUR SITE. IT WAS ALL I COULD DO TO GET HIM TO REMAIN SEATED FOR THE NEXT 30 MINUTES. IT DID HELP THAT THE BUTTON BUCK AND DOE CAME BACK OUT INTO THE FOOD PLOT AND CAME UP TO WITHIN 15 FEET OF OUR GROUND BLIND TO CHECK US OUT. ONCE WE WENT DOWN TO THE BUCK PARKER IMMEDIATELY STARTED TAKING PICTURES AND TEXTING FRIENDS. KEEP IN MIND, PARKER WHO IS TYPICALLY A VERY QUIET, WELL MANNERED CHILD TALKED MY EAR OFF NONSTOP FOR THE NEXT 3 HOURS. HE WAS ON CLOUD NINE AND COULDN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT HUNT.
