Hunt Story

Weeks of trail camera photos of this buck showed this buck moving from west to east on the north side of this stand site on his way to irrigated peanuts growing 150 yards to the northeast. Northerly winds were safely huntable for this buck. The stand site also allowed low impact entry and exit, and i had three stand sets within a 10 acre area for various wind directions. On good wind, I hunted the buck three times prior to this hunt and saw him inside 50 yards each time. I missed him at 45 yards on day two of the season; my arrow falling barely short in a low light shot. Never had the buck showed any sign of smelling me on a hunt. On this day, the trail camera confirmed that he'd been in the area the day before, so I chose my stand among the three accordingly. At 630pm, does and fawns began passing the stand site on the way to the peanuts. Just before 7, the buck came into view from the west and fed into range in the 3-acre plot. For 8 eternally long minutes, the buck fed in the patch in a slightly "quartering to" position at 23 yards. I waited for broadside. When the deer abruptly turned and casually walked straight away, I drew and made a doe bleat mouth call. At thirty yards, the deer stopped to look back. I found the crease behind his left shoulder, and let it go. He ran 60 yards and tipped over.
