Greenbrier High Wins Georgia Bass Fishing State Championship
Drew Denman | May 9, 2025

The 2025 Georgia High School Association bass fishing state champions are Tripp Tamasi and Matthew Johnson, of Greenbrier High School. Tripp and Matthew had four big spotted bass, and their limit was anchored by a 5-lb., 9-oz. largemouth that was Big Bass of the tournament. Also pictured is their boat captain.
State championships in Georgia high school sports bring pride and prestige to local communities and towns. The 2025 Georgia bass fishing state championship crown will reside in the city of Evans in Columbia County, as a team from Greenbrier High School took the win.
The 2025 GHSA Bass Fishing State Championship, presented by Alfa Insurance, was held May 3, 2025, at Lake Lanier. Congratulations to state champions Tripp Tamasi and Matthew Johnson of Greenbrier. A total of 108 two-angler teams made the finals from three qualifying tournaments held in February, March and April. Tripp and Matthew got the win without taking part in Friday’s practice day because they had prom that evening.
To say that the tournament was an endurance race with Mother Nature is an understatement, but rough weather did not affect attitudes. Challenged with hail and a tornado or waterspout near the end of Friday pre-fishing, and then constant precipitation on Saturday, these young anglers earned the bass they weighed in at 3 p.m. at the Laurel Park boat ramp. A plus 20-lb. five-bass limit is a heavy lift in any tournament, and it’s a sweet bag of fish when weighing in for the state championship.
Anson Wilson, who helps put on the GHSA bass fishing tournaments, spoke to GON after the weigh-in. “We had a good turnout. We fought the weather—had some bad storms during practice, and the guys fished today through rain and overcast skies,” Anson said. “Greenbrier, congratulations to you guys for winning with more than 20 pounds. The top 10 teams will be going to Oklahoma for the national championships, and we look forward to seeing that. The continued growth of Georgia high school fishing—that’s the biggest thing. These kids are very fortunate to be able to have boat captains and parents who support this.
“We look forward to next season starting off in January 2026 at Lake Seminole in Bainbridge, Georgia,” said Anson, who voiced appreciation to GHSA Bass Coordinator Dr. Robin Hines, Federation Angler, Lake Lanier staff, Alfa Insurance, TeamIP, Student Angler Federation, Major League Fishing and all the anglers, boat captains, coaches, volunteers and fans who contributed to an outstanding day of fishing.
Let’s hope that the top ten teams from Georgia have conditions more suitable for fishing during the national championship tournament at Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma. GON will be rooting for a Georgia team to bring the trophy home.

The South Forsyth team of Charles Roberts and Reese Mutter placed second at Lake Lanier in the 2025 GHSA bass fishing state championship tournament, just 5 ounces short of first place.
