GON Kids – December 2016

Brad Gill | December 1, 2016

While most Georgia hunters were hanging out in the deer woods the weekend of Nov. 11-13 looking for a rutting buck, DNR didn’t let the weekend go by without hosting another one of its Hunt and Learn programs designed to engage youth and their parents in hunting. The Nov. 11-13 program was for rabbit hunting.

Eight kids and about 40 total people attended the DNR Hunt and Learn rabbit hunt the weekend of Nov. 11-13 at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center.

“We had a great group of guys this year, and in our meeting, we found out that for the most part none of them had been rabbit hunting before,” said Greg Malcom, of Buckhead.

Greg has a line of AKC rabbit dogs and has been volunteering with the Hunt and Learn program for five years.

“Before the hunt, we gathered together and explained what to expect hunting with a pack of beagles and the team work between hunter and beagle. We also went over the gun safety and what is to be expected in the field,” said Greg.

One of Greg’s highlights from the weekend was when William Reese, 15, of Roswell, made a great shot on his first rabbit that was being chased by his hounds. There were three other packs of dogs at the Hunt and Learn event, and several other kids shot rabbits, too.

Hunt and Learns are great weekends that help teach young folks about hunting. For more information, go to www.gohuntgeorgia.com/CharlieElliott/LearnToHuntFish.
