Hunt Story
The deer came out while we were watching several other small bucks and a large group of does, and snuck up to within 40 yards of the stand before we saw how big he was. We had does all around the stand including right behind it, and they started blowing when Weston stood up to aim the rifle in the tripod at the buck. It didn’t bother the buck who stood still looking in the direction of the blowing does. Weston fired his shot, and the buck (and all of the other deer) took off running. The buck ran about 75 yards and stopped and looked back towards us so we assumed he had missed on his first shot. He reloaded the rifle and fired another round at the buck. The buck stood still for a moment, before turning and walking away from us towards the hardwood bottom. We assumed he missed again. We waited a few minutes and got down from the stand. We found no blood where shot one occurred, and quickly moved to where the buck was standing when shot 2 occurred and immediately found blood. From there, we could see the buck lying about 5 yards into the hardwood bottom. When we pulled the deer out of the woods, we realized he had 2 bullet holes, one just a little behind the heart and the other in the front shoulder. Turns out he didn’t miss either time. This is his first big buck, and he couldn’t be more proud.
