Hunt Story

I was positioned and waiting in one of my five ladder stands placed on the property. Had not seen anything since sunrise. Had lots of activity on game camera positioned nearby feeder. This buck walked up from a hardwood bottom into the clearcut towards feeder. He stopped at the feeder for a moment. I had him in my scope and knew he was a shooter. Was pleased to see a 10-point with that kind of mass on our club. Typically we have a lot of tall racked eight pointers with very little mass. We were basically hunting that morning to thin some of the does prior to the closing of our favorite processor. It was my luck that he was the first to expose himself as I would've probably ended my hunt on the first one or two good sized nannies. Hit him high in the back just behind the rib cage. Shattered his liver. He barrel rolled and hit the ground. I was surprised to see him flop and return to his feet. He trotted off gingerly, but I could tell that he was hit hard. Watched him move out of sight and made several land references to the last spot that I saw him at. After a 30 minute wait, I climbed down from the stand and gathered my gear. Walked to where the feeder was and looked for blood. Not finding any initially, I moved in the direction that he ran and found him piled up in the vicinity where I last saw him. Of the seven killed that morning between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM, he was the only buck. very productive morning for the club.
