Hunt Story

My son and I went to our stands around 2. I was sitting facing a 300 yard food plot. I had watched several does feed and actually bed down in the food plot. I was perched almost at the top of the hill in a tripod with about 70 yards of entrance way behind me with planted pines on one side and a pature on the other. As I watched the feeding and resting does, I heard something behind. I spun around with my rifle to see a flash of the doe as she busted across the firebreak. Immediately, the buck was right behind her. I was able to take my shot as he made his way to the opposite side of the firebreak. I rarely get shaky after harvesting deer, but I had to wait for a couple minutes before descending. I knew he was a shooter, but did not realize how big he was. I went to the point of impact and found blood. I had told my son that I would wait to track, but I could not stand to wait. He went into the pines at the meeting of 2 firebreaks. I walked about 10 yards in the pines and was shocked at how high the blood was on 2 trees. I was about 20 yards in the pines and remembered my flir. I pulled out my flir and he was about 20 yards from me laying in a little depression. As I got closer I saw his antlers. Luckily, he had run within 15 yards of the firebreak. When my son finished hunting, he brought the side by side and quickly decided we needed the tractor instead. What a wonderful hunt!
