Hunt Story
It had already been a good morning hunt after a rain the day prior and the evening hunt was going well. I had spotted a nice buck cruising early and had a two does in front of me and two does working their way around the field over my left shoulder. I was trying to keep an eye on both when he came over the hill like a bull on a mission. He had his head postured low and grunted at the does that were now 20 or 30 yards from me. I had no shot and was watching him over my shoulder, couldn’t move. The wind was coming from the front of me towards the open he came across. As he worked to the right he winded me, spun, and hauled tail across the field. I turned, found him in the scope and tried to stop him with a mix of grunts myself. When he did stop all I could see were neck, head and rack. I placed the cross hair on his neck and touched off on the trigger. I heard a hit but saw nothing. Knowing he was either gone forever or laying right there dead, I got down from the stand immediately. I paced it off at 140 steps and there he was, thick horned and muddy legged. A beautiful 8 I had named Mossy Horns because of a trail picture I have of him with Spanish moss hanging off of his rack. What a beautiful Dooly County buck, I am thankful and still grinning.
