Hunt Story
He was a new deer that showed up the night before on camera. We had no prior photos of him or anything. Lockdown this year has been going on for about two weeks, and it seemed it was only getting worse. The next morning this buck was standing in front of the camera at around 7:00 a.m. while I was taking my daughters to school. I huffed and puffed a little and asked my girls what should I do? Go try and kill him now or wait. My 9-year-old, who doesn't care anything about hunting, said, "No, if you go in now you're just going to run him out. Sneak in there this afternoon and kill him when he comes back." Then from the back seat my 5-year-old agrees. So against my better judgement, I decided to listen to my non-hunting princess daughters and wait til that afternoon. I got in the stand around 3:00 that afternoon, and after battling mosquitoes and heat stroke, around 4:45 I had a deer jump the creek downwind from me, and after working a scrape all of a sudden blew and left in a hurry. At that point I assumed my hunt was over. Told myself the hard part was over might as well sit it out. Small buck came through at sunset, and with the last few minutes of shooting time, I began to scan the shadows of the food plot and to my surprise at the last minute, there he was. I didn't hesitate and grabbed the gun and took the shot I was given. Worked perfectly. My girls were right. Sometimes you just got to listen to your kids and keep it simple.
