Hunt Story

I was hunting the first rifle hunt on the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, 7 - 9 November 2024. I typically stay in my tree stand all day, especially in November on public land. You never know when that magic moment is going to happen, thanks to the rut and to other hunters who are less patient and tend to move around the refuge sooner rather than later. There was a slight drizzle on and off all morning. From my previous experience, I knew once it stopped that the woods would come alive, and I would probably start seeing deer. I was standing on my Millennium tree stand, watching the thick cover 30 yards behind me. I was focused on a travel corridor that I had witnessed bucks use in the past. Just as I had hoped, he came up the hill with his head down, trailing a doe that had walked by much earlier. From the time I saw him until he was on the ground was less than 10 seconds. He is not a huge buck by most hunter's standards, but memories of this harvest will last a lifetime. Nature is amazing!
