Hunt Story

Had seen this buck on camera several times. Seeing pictures of him from behind, his rack looked like field goal posts, so my Dad and me named him Field Goal. I wanted Field Goal really bad. Had only seen a bunch of does and a few spikes on Friday and Saturday. Sunday had called for a little cooler weather and possible light rain. It was foggy and lightly raining as it started getting light. I had a couple of doe come out and could barely see them. They fed and walked off. Then had four doe come in from my left and two more came from my front right. All six started looking out across the clear cut/field, and I saw a big buck walking straight for them. It was Field Goal and my heart started racing. I eased my 30-30 up and got on him as he was walking. I was about to try and stop him and he suddenly paused about 50 yards out. With crosshairs right behind his shoulder, I shot. He jumped and took off straight out from me into the woods. I started shaking like crazy. My Dad text to see if I shot. I told him yes and it was Field Goal. Told him it ran into the woods. He told me to stay in my stand and wait at least 30 minutes and that he would come to me. The longest 30 minutes ever. My Dad came to my stand and I pointed to where Field Goal was when I shot. My Dad said there was some really good, red blood. I climbed down and followed the blood trail. There was a lot of blood through the woods and Field Goal had gone only about 30 yards. There was so much blood because I hit him the heart. It was my first deer while sitting by myself and it will now be on my wall.
