Hunt Story

It was November 10 when Uncle Kevin called, excitement clear in his voice. “I got a picture of Crook!” he said. Crook was the big buck we’d been tracking all season, an old deer with a unique, slightly crooked rack, which had earned him his name. “He was here after dark,” my uncle continued, “Do you want to hunt in the morning?” I didn’t need to be asked twice. The next morning, on November 11 around 6 o’clock, I was heading to the woods, my heart racing with excitement and a little hope. I reached my stand, got settled, and tried to calm my nerves. I didn’t have to wait long. Only about five minutes had passed when I heard a sound to my left. I froze, straining to hear, and out stepped Crook, moving quickly, like he was on a mission. My heart pounded as I grabbed my gun and took aim, knowing I might only have seconds. But he was moving fast, and I needed him to pause. I let out a quick, sharp “Bah!” He stopped, just for a split second—long enough for me to steady my aim and pull the trigger. Crook dropped right there, in his tracks. I let out a long breath, a mix of relief and thrill washing over me. The hunt for Crook was finally over, and I couldn’t wait to tell Uncle Kevin.
