My son John had previously hunted the stand Thanksgiving morning and took a nice 8 pointer and told me that he had seen other shooters in the area and suggested that I hunt there. Three days later I went. It was overcast and about 10 minutes before sunrise when I saw the deer enter the hardwoods from the thick pines. I forgot my binoculars and am using open iron sights on my flintlock rifle so I could not identify the size of the deer until it was about 20 yards away. I previously passed up some other bucks earlier in the year but decided I would shoot this one. The buck started walking away . I shot it broadside at 35 yards and it ran about 100 yards .
