Public Hearings On River Access And Fishing Rights

The issue of fishing access and what constitutes a navigable waterway will be the topic at upcoming public meetings. The first hearing is in Meriwether County at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Towerhouse Farm Brewery in Gay. Anyone wishing to provide public comment must first be put on the agenda by emailing [email protected].
The meeting is part of a special Georgia House of Representatives Study Committee looking into fishing access on freshwater streams and rivers, stemming from issues at the Yellow Jacket Shoals area of the Flint River. After a court order banning fishing at Yellow Jacket Shoals, legislative action opened it back up—at least according to current law enforcement interpretations.
Additional meetings are scheduled to take place on Oct. 12 in Clarkesville, Oct. 18 in Blue Ridge, and on Oct. 25 in Statesboro. Places and times are still to be determined.
