So far this summer, the Georgia coast has produced two new state records for Georgia anglers, a women’s state record for tiger shark and a men’s state record for red grouper.

Pam Page, of Savannah, was fishing near artificial reef JY, about 20 miles due east of St. Catherine’s Island, on June 3 when she hooked into a 190-lb. tiger shark. It took her about 40 minutes to land the beast.

Georgia’s Coastal Resources Division keeps state records for men’s and women’s categories. The men’s state record for tiger shark is a 794-lb. behemoth caught by Chuck Hall in 1975.

This summer’s other record, a men’s state record for red grouper, was caught by John Wren, of Soperton, on June 11. He caught the  19-lb., 8-oz. fish bottom fishing at The Deli, a popular ledge on the west side of the Gulf Stream about 80 miles east of Ossabaw Island.
