Hunt Story

I wasn't going to go hunting. I had been sick for over two weeks, and my grandson was out of town. He has never killed a buck, and I wanted him to kill one this year. I was feeling better, and I decided that I would go out and do a little 'scouting.' But I would take my rifle along just in case. I had been a few times while I was sick and lately I had not been seeing many deer. My camera, however, had quite a few pictures of both bucks and does during the night hours. It was Sunday, Nov. 19 and it had been in the 40s the past few nights. I got to my stand, which is on the edge of 30-year planted pines, and behind the stand is woods with a lot of hardwood trees. About 4:30 p.m. four does came of the hardwoods and headed to the feeder. And then about 5:15 this buck came out of the woods from a similar direction. He was only about 50 yards from me, and he was not in any hurry at all. My first thought was that I wished my grandson Joe was here. I couldn't help it. He was just too good of an opportunity. I eased my rifle up slowly, and when he stopped, I took the easy shot. He ran about 50 yards and fell dead. There are other bucks out there and plenty of time left for Joe. The rut is just getting started good in this part of Georgia.
