Hunt Story

Around 8:45 in the morning, I made a series of tending grunts. I barely had time to get my call back in my pocket when I heard fighting in the distance. Not long after, I noticed two nice bucks headed my way. The biggest was atleast a 5.5-year-old 6-point, and Meriwether is 4 on one side (quality-buck regs), so I had to let him go. They made it about 50 yards when I saw another buck trying to head them off. It was another great looking buck, but I quickly decided to let them go. They were acting spooky, and soon disappeared out of sight. A few minutes later I saw a big-bodied deer moving through the thick briars along the edge where planted pines meet a hardwood bottom. When he entered a small opening, I knew he was a mature buck. After missing, I finally settled the crosshairs and made a shakey 150-yard shot! I'm not afraid to admit it, but all that excitement in a 15-minute span had me all shook up! That's what it's all about. I love being in the woods and enjoy every minute, but I'll never forget this particular morning in Meriwether!
